In the heart of the Dumagat community, where nature and resilience intertwine, lives a father whose story is quietly breaking hearts—and inspiring many. Jocel Datu Hortelano, a loving husband and father of four, is currently battling a condition that has changed his life in unimaginable ways.

Diagnosed with post-traumatic osteoarthritis, Jocel has lost the ability to walk. His condition has worsened over time, developing wounds all over his body that add unbearable pain to his already fragile state. The simplest movements bring discomfort. His ability to provide for his family—once fueled by his craft of making barbecue sticks—has been severely affected. With four young children to care for, his wife, Beverly Doroteo Hortelano, has taken on the difficult role of full-time caregiver and breadwinner, doing her best to keep their household afloat.
Despite these challenges, hope came in the form of compassion.
On March 17, Handog ng Maria Maria, together with kind-hearted volunteers, arranged for Jocel to receive his orthopedic consultation and provided an ambulatory service to transport him to Dr. Jose Rodriguez Memorial Hospital. They stood by him as early as 3:00 AM, lining up and supporting him every step of the way.

A follow-up check-up was conducted on March 24, when Jocel finally received his X-ray results. While his wounds are showing signs of healing, the bone damage revealed a much more complicated problem—his bones have fused, rendering his leg non-functional. According to the attending doctors, he will need orthopedic surgery involving the insertion of metal supports (bakal) to give him a chance to walk again. He has now been referred to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

This isn’t just about restoring mobility—it’s about allowing Jocel to return to his role as a father, provider, and member of the Dumagat community. It’s about giving a family hope and dignity in the face of overwhelming trials.
